New Diocesan Initiative for 6-12 Grades

04/25/2024

On April 6, 2022, Bishop Persico Promulgated the intention to move the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation from 11th Grade to 9th Grade.  With this intention came several new expectations for how to prepare Candidates as well as engage them following the celebration of the Sacrament.  The full Decree of Promulgation can be found here.

Confirmation will be celebrated according to the following years as the Diocese makes this transition:
Spring 2023 -- 10th & 11th Grades
Spring 2024 -- 9th & 10th Grades
Spring 2025 and following -- 9th Grade only (and/or those older who for whatever reason had not received the Sacrament, but are interested in now doing so with a period of formation i.e. Order of Christian Initiation.)

In addition to the change to when Confirmation can be celebrated, the Diocese is initiating new Faith Formation Curriculum for 6-12th Grades.  Information on these changes can be found here.

The Diocese is also holding vicariate meetings in September for parents, grandparents and catechists to attend to learn more about the new 6-12 FF process.  Any other interested parishioners should feel free to come, too.  All meetings begin at 7:00 p.m.  The meetings dates and venues are:

Sept. 20 at St. Jude in Erie

Sept. 26 at St. Agatha in Meadville

Sept. 28 at St. Mark in Emporium

St. Francis Xavier Parish has chosen the 6-year rollout option so we can communicate and prepare for these changes thoughtfully.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Irene Schneider, Director of Evangelization.
